day moved slow
as cow and ducks
listened to the grass grow

Decided

during their stroll
around the melt pond
the final word is hers
it is still too early for nesting

Underworld

bottoms up
five dive
down

Balance

on one leg or two
mallards balance
on a river log

The Mallards

morning constitutional
around the still pond
beneath the leafing trees

Jamboree

Friends of the flock
fly in from afar
determined to attend
the winter wingding.

I said

slow down a little, enjoy the scenery.
The marsh is marvelous this time of year.
But he paddled furiously on
determined to miss every enjoyment in his path.

They venture forth
for a final swim
before the river freezes them out.
