Late Bloom

dahlia’s delicacy
in counterpoint
to fall’s exuberance

night is banished
now is
light’s time to play

as everything changes
keep flowering
as long as you can

times’s skeleton
a spirit
amidst mist

spirit
of a dear friend
visiting again

we need the shadows
to know how bright
the light can be

spotlight of sun
backdrop of woodland shade
flowering stalk takes a star turn

emerging from their rock wall den
into the bright morning light
and hunting lessons

putting the garden to bed
a startling glimpse of spring
the foreshadowing anemone

by winter’s demands
evergreens refuse to release color or needles
and stand in defiant contrast to the ever greying landscape.

A harmony of light and dark,
the forest floor wears herringbone.

My feet feel an earth drained of her color.
My mind’s eye imagines greens below blue skies.
