a still cold wind
lavender flags fly

Those little steppe irises are the first burst of colour in my garden too and therefore much loved. I am glad they have their own poem now!

I’ve never quite comprehended how they came to be named “flags.” Now, it makes sense! Not only that, I found a flower in one of our bayous that’s called alligator flag. Spring has all the flags flying.
Oh, my, such a joy to see this flower again
My grandma called them flags. I still grow her white iris. When I move so do they.
